Food Group FAQ – Fruits

The latest guidelines from the US Department of Agriculture regarding fruits is 2 servings a day. This may require some preparation and thinking ahead but it’s not as hard as it seems.

What counts as a fruit?

Fresh whole fruits, frozen fruits, canned fruits, 100% fruit juices, and dried fruits

Are frozen fruits and canned fruits as beneficial as fresh fruit?

Frozen and canned fruits are good alternatives to fresh fruit as long as they do not have any added sugar (or sweeteners).

What about 100% fruit juice and dried fruit?

Both of these count as fruit but should be limited as they are very easy to drink and eat too much of. Store bought juices may contain less nutrients as the whole fruit is not always used in the juicing process. When it comes to dried fruit half of a fresh fruit serving is considered a serving.
