A Mindful Muslim Eater is a LIVE event on Tuesday, September 14, 2021
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
ما ملأ ابن ادم وعاء شرا من بطنه بحسب ابن ادم اكلات يقمن صلبه فان كان لامحالة فثلث لطعامه وثلث شراب وثلث للنفس
“Mankind fills no vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son/daughter of Adam (as) to eat just a few mouthfuls to keep their spine straight. But if you must (fill it), then 1/3 food, 1/3 drink, and 1/3 air.” [Tirmidhi]
This hadith from the Prophet ﷺ is a very clear indication of how we should consider eating yet we live a lifestyle of living to eat, rather than eating to live. Everything we do is centered around food. If we’re happy we go out to eat, if we’re sad we order in. To celebrate an achievement we grab dessert. We even gather to mourn our loved ones around food.
If we wanted disconnect from this food culture and try to apply the above hadith, how do we do it?
Is it 1/3 by weight? By volume? Is it literal?
As a Registered Dietitian, this hadith always intrigued me and I am excited to share my findings with you in my signature webinar: A Mindful Muslim Eater, where we dive into this hadith (and others) to eat in a prophetically inspired manner so we may grow closer to our Creator.
I hope to see you there, friends. Just hit the button below to register for $24.
Warmly,
